I wrote a few weeks ago about one of my favorite Thanksgiving traditions. My favorite New Year’s tradition is a bit older than the National Dog Show, but its local nature probably means it’s not as widely known. The Mummers Parade is an annual event in Philadelphia often likened to Carnival or Mardi Gras as it’s visually similar in nature.
The parade is made up of five divisions: Comics, Wench Brigades, Fancies, String Bands and Fancy Brigades. Each division is comprised of individuals and clubs who entertain and compete in friendly competition. While the participants aren’t professionals in this field, the quality of the production is quite impressive. Costumes for large clubs can approach the six-figure mark. My favorite division is the Fancy Brigades, who now, due to the enormity of the sets they use, perform indoors in a theater-style set-up.
