I am sure it is not uncommon for our Global Traveler readers who spend 100 nights per year in hotels to come upon a hotel in the midst of refurbishment. Do you take the chance, hoping to be the first to check out the new design, or do you shy away for fear those “finishing touches” they are working on are in fact running water and electricity?

When booking my travel to Miami, I was forewarned the National Hotel in Miami’s South Beach was undergoing the final stages of a major refresh. Eager to see the 75-year-old landmark property’s interpretation of “refresh,” I booked my room knowing mild inconveniences may be expected. I always feel empathetic towards hotels, as they are often forced to manage major improvement projects with zero impact to the guests. I imagine inviting guests to my home and trying to hide the fact we are building an addition or installing new wood floors.  

My first impressions upon arrival were far better than expected. I was forewarned about scaffolding, though there was none noticeable as we pulled off of Collins Avenue. The lobby featured rich wood floors, plush seating and multiple staff members eager to assist. My room was on the 10^th floor overlooking the ocean. New carpet, furniture and an incredibly comfortable bed reconfirmed my gamble had in fact paid off.

In the morning, after a visit to the onsite gym, I enjoyed the breakfast buffet outside overlooking the infinity pool and the beach. Though the work in progress was not completely invisible, I would say the National Hotel is maintaining grace during transition, no doubt acquired through its long history of hosting luxury travelers. I understand the final projects will be concluding very soon, and I encourage GT readers to check the property out with no gamble involved.
