My Weekend Escape

by Holly Godbey

Jun 19, 2009

As I wrote in my blog last week, I took a weekend trip to Palm Beach last weekend. I had never been to that area before, and I was eager for a few days of lying in the sun and spending time with friends. I had no complaints about my Southwest flight at all. We arrived at Philadelphia International Airport at about 6:15 a.m. and proceeded directly to security. The line was a bit long, but we made it to our gate with a few minutes to spare. I was worried that their boarding method would lead to a disorganized struggle to get on the plane, but it was orderly and smooth. The seats were comfortable and the armrests movable. Our short flight was highlighted by a friendly staff and complimentary snacks and drinks. Two-and-a-half hours later, we were on the ground early. We met up with our third friend, Beth, who had just arrived from New York on JetBlue, and were on our way. The Brazilian Court was beautiful, nestled on the corner of Australian Avenue in Palm Beach, only three blocks from the beach and two blocks from Worth Avenue. We checked in and were escorted to the Grant Suite, our luxury digs for the next three days. We quickly explored (with two bedrooms and three bathrooms there was plenty to explore) and settled in, then took a quick tour of the property. After the tour, we ventured down to Worth Avenue and had lunch at Taboo (My pear and brie pizza was to die for!). The lazy afternoon was spent relaxing by the hotel pool, sipping pineapple caprianas and giggling. On Friday night we indulged at the hotel’s Cafe Boulud. (Chef Daniel Boulud and a large group of friends were visiting the property the same weekend!) Completely sated and exhausted from a day of travel that began before dawn, we all fell asleep in the extra-comfy hotel beds. Considering it is hurricane season, it is pretty shocking that we did not encounter one drop of rain during our stay. Saturday afternoon rain clouds threatened our day at the beach but never actually delivered any rain.  It was another gorgeous day. The hotel generously provided transportation to the beach, and we spent the afternoon soaking in the sun, enjoying the warm Atlantic Ocean and reading magazines. We left when we thought rain was imminent, but as it never came, we spent another hour enjoying the day by the hotel pool. We made our way to West Palm Beach for dinner and fun on Clematis Street, then spent the rest of the evening enjoying the Brazilian Court’s gorgeous courtyard and plush white seating. Unfortunately, Sunday rolled around. We enjoyed a late morning brunch at Cafe Boulud. I spent my last hour in Palm Beach reading by the pool. The airport was a short ride from the hotel, and before I knew it, we were at our gate waiting to return to Philadelphia. We departed on time and landed early, but the flight home was a bumpy one. Coincidentally, guess what it did as soon as we settled into seats at the airport gate? It started to pour! Heavy rains pounded the windows of the terminal. The shower passed quickly, but talk about timing. –Kim Krol, eFlyer editor, circulation and public relations executive
