This past week I traveled to Miami to help with Global Traveler’s Leisure Lifestyle Awards. It was my first work event with the team and my first time staying in Miami. I’d only previously driven through the city. I was excited to get to warmer weather before more cold weather rolled through Pennsylvania.

We grabbed an early-morning flight out of Philly, and with a layover in Atlanta, we arrived in Miami just after 1 p.m. I had plenty of time to unwind after the flight at our hotel, InterContinental Miami.

I couldn’t help but take in the city on our way to dinner. I remember being fascinated by how distinctly different it felt from other American cities. Many large cities have skyscrapers with little balcony access, but in Miami, a majority of the buildings are built with balconies to capitalize on the warm weather. Many buildings are also a distinct white with blue windows, giving the city a modern, tropical feel.

Before the event I had some time to explore the hotel. I didn’t pack a swimsuit, but I made my way down to the pool and took in the views. Around the pool there was plenty of recreational space to hang out and seating areas overlooking the bay.

On Monday the events team and I had breakfast at Café Bastille to map out our best course of action. We sat outside feeling like we were at a Parisian café with pastel green décor and walls covered in ivy. The food was delicious, as well. I had a mango smoothie and blueberry pancakes that looked almost too good to eat.

The rest of Monday was filled with setting up and other event preparations. Once the venue was set, guests started to arrive. The rest of the night was filled with awards to give out, lively conversation and networking.

After the successful evening, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself because the excitement of the awards was over and we had to return to our normal routine. I enjoyed the last of what the InterContinental had to offer. I wasn’t sure what to expect from my first event and there’s more to learn, but I do know I am excited and ready for future events.
