Ordinarily, I wouldn’t have ice cream for breakfast, but I made an exception last Sunday. While at Museum of Ice Cream, I had to indulge in several servings.
MOIC opened in Chicago last July, to coincide with National Ice Cream Day. Chicago became the fourth city for MOIC, joining New York City, Austin and Singapore. Located in The Shops at Tribune Towers, MOIC is 13,500 square feet devoted to the sweet frozen treat.
The tour starts with a brief explanation aboard the Sprink-L, a pink nod to Chicago’s iconic elevated trains. Once you step off the replica train, I meandered through 14 exhibits, including five stops for ice cream samples (each with vegan and allergen-free options).
The first stop was a shop of cocktails and ice cream. I would have been quite happy spending the day right there.
A zodiac flavor profile was one of the stations. As an Aquarius, my profile is part sweet, salty and floral. I must say, I was disappointed with my lucky toppings of rainbow sprinkles and caramel sauce, while my Sagittarius pal had frozen mango chunks and candied oranges. Clearly, he won that round.
The Inside Scoop wall had 32 scoop models under which are ingredients and a bit of other info. The Flavor Wall listed 231 flavors along with depictions. There was also a mini-golf hole requiring skillful putting around giant desserts. The ice cream lab is where the magic happens: The treats are created.
The tour ends at a 56-foot-long sprinkles pool. I admit I wasn’t paying attention and found myself sinking in thousands of plastic sprinkles, but that only added to the fun. Most folks did more traditional dives into the pool.
Last Halloween season, MOIC turned into Museum of I-Scream for additional scary fun. There are future special events planned but not revealed yet.
MOIC was ranked in the top 10 most Instagram-able museums by The Smithsonian Institute. We helped that ranking by posting several pictures on our pages.
Despite being dedicated to ice cream, you don’t have to love the dessert to enjoy MOIC, but it helps. Either way, it is a fun experience.
