It’s Mud Season in New Hampshire. As warm air begins to push into the region, the snowcover is receding to reveal muddy patches of brown grass — and it seems as if it happened overnight.

Despite the mild New England winter this year, most ski resorts in the region were boasting miles of open terrain as recently as last weekend, so it clearly made sense to throw our ski gear into the car as my sister, my niece and I packed up and headed to the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, N.H., for a girls’ spa getaway. (Look for a Spa Report in an upcoming issue of Global Traveler.)

We figured we’d spend the morning on the slopes and the afternoon in the spa.

But it seems nature had other plans. A few warm days — a recording-breaking 71 degrees in Boston on March 12 — and the terrain has changed. There’s still plenty of snow on the mountain — and I saw several geared-out families heading to the lifts — but we decided to shift our focus, 100 percent, to the spa, a gorgeous space added on to the iconic Omni Mount Washington Resort just three years ago.

Maybe I’ll find a nice New Hampshire Mud Wrap on the menu.
