A few months ago, I found myself in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, in the little city of Sioux Falls. “Little” is a relative term — at 164,000, it is the largest city in either North or South Dakota. Likewise, it is both a charming small town and bustling city. Nestled in the corner of the sprawling state, the city’s namesake strikes the eye — the Big Sioux Falls. Comically enough, the Falls are easy to miss. We drove around for about twenty minutes, looking for an entrance to the Falls, which are nestled away in the center of the city. The hike up was mild, with flat terrain and wheelchair ramps for access. If you are expecting Niagara Falls, that is not what you will get. Instead of being tall, the Falls are impressive in number. Falls Park boasts several groups of waterfalls, each aesthetically pleasing in its own way. There are several areas of the park at which visitors can step out onto islands, close enough to the majestic waterfalls to feel their misty breeze. Perhaps the most breathtaking view of the Falls came from the top of the park’s observation tower, where the extent of the Falls can be seen.   It might not be every day that you’ll find yourself in South Dakota — part of what many have nicknamed “flyover country” — but if you do, the Sioux Falls are a classic convergence of industrialization and nature worth checking out. — Daphne Gould, intern
