Milwaukee Lakefront

by John Wroblewski

Oct 11, 2017

Every time I go to Milwaukee, I remember I need to make this short trip from Chicago more often. I recently spent some quality time on Milwaukee’s lakefront.

The Milwaukee Art Museum is one of the largest in the country. In addition to more than 3,000 beautiful works of art, the museum itself is a sight to behold. The Quadracci Pavilion features a wing-like structure that opens to a span of 217 feet during the day. It folds over the tail at night or during bad weather. Watching this open or close is one of the biggest tourist attractions.

The Bronze Fonz is another popular attraction. The life-sized sculpture of Fonzie (Henry Winkler) features his iconic “double thumbs up” pose.

The Riverwalk Boat Tours offer several different tour options, including a Wild Wednesday Craft Beer Cruise. Every week a new brewery is featured, with a brewery representative discussing the beer and offering samples.

Of course, every trip to Milwaukee includes a stop at the Mars Cheese Castle on the return. Cheeses and cheese products surround you in this cheese paradise. I might have overdone it on the samples, but I was in cheese heaven.

With the Cubs and Brewers potentially meeting in the playoffs, I might be making another trip in the near future. I’m already hoping for that.

The Argosaronic Islands Are Calling

The Saronic or Argo Saronic Islands of Greece call travelers to explore its seven small islands and islets brimming with history, natural sites and more. With most easily accessible by boat, the islands’ proximity to ports of Athens make the Saronic Islands an ideal destination for those preferring shorter boat rides. In fact, trips from Athens ports to the islands take only between 10 minutes and two hours, depending on the island you choose, making them perfect for day or weekend trips. From Piraeus port, you can access Hydra, Spetses, Aegina and Poros directly. Come explore these stunning islands with us and find the inspiration to plan your next trip to these islands. Hydra Hydra town curves around a slope overlooking the Argosaronic Gulf like an amphitheater and is considered one of the most romantic destinations in Greece. Most unique to the island is its lack of vehicles. People on the island get around on mules and donkeys as well as water taxis, making for a peaceful and laid-back day. Hydra lies a two-hour ferry ride from Piraeus port in Athens.

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.
