On a recent trip to Austin, I wanted to see as many different types of live music as possible. If there’s one thing Austin has plenty of, it’s live music. On our first night we went to a more traditional concert at the Moody Theater at Austin City Limits Live. We saw Lucero, a Memphis band with a sound of soul, rock and country. The space is intimate yet still fits a large crowd. It was a great first night in Austin. The next night we saw a Texas-style swing band performing in the dining area of Central Market, a Texas grocery store chain. It was my first (and possibly last) concert at a grocery store and a really unique experience. Later that night, while walking through the downtown’s popular Sixth Street, we stumbled upon lively music at Friends Bar. The musicians of the Eric Tessmer Band were incredibly talented, and we decided to stay for their entire set.
During a visit to the city’s South Congress neighborhood, we happened upon a band performing at Güero’s Taco Bar. We were treated to some classic blues and country tunes while devouring their flavorful tacos. Before our trip we read about The Mohawk. The multilevel space boasts a one-of-a-kind indoor/outdoor stage complete with a bar and roof deck. The Mohawk features local and touring acts. On the night of our visit, we saw dance-punk band !!! (Chk Chk Chk). We had never heard of the band or their music. The band and audience were so happy it was infectious, and we left feeling a boost from their positive energy and music.
Our final Austin music experience was at The Little Longhorn Saloon. The authentic Texas honky-tonk bar features nightly music and specials. We saw a true honky-tonk band and enjoyed watching the spontaneous traditional Texas two-step dancing by some talented patrons.
Seeing live music in Austin is a personal experience, with plenty of styles and performance options available for every taste. I was thrilled with my first Austin music experience. — Katie Skrzek, digital director/vice president

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
