Since Canada is the only other nation celebrating Labor Day (okay, they call it Labour Day) on the first Monday of September — i.e., tomorrow — I figured I’d do a little research to see how business travelers might be impacted by other holidays this fall.  Most countries celebrate their labor day as May Day, May 1. The only ones coming up soon are in New Zealand and in parts of Australia. New Zealand’s Labor Day is the fourth Monday in October (this year, Oct. 24). Australia celebrates Labour Day by state or territory rather than nationally, and while in most places there it’s celebrated in March or May, the first Monday in October is the holiday for New South Wales, South Australia and the Capital District (this year, that’s Oct. 1).  Nineteen other countries have some kind of holiday in September, but this U.S. State Dept. list doesn’t say whether they’re closed for business on those days. So here’s what’s coming soon: Brazil’s Independence Day, Sept. 7. Five Central American countries celebrate Independence Day on Sept. 15, followed by Mexico on Sept. 16 and Chile on Sept. 18. And the Czech Republic celebrates Statehood Day on Sept. 28. In Australia, Labor Day is sometimes called “Eight-Hour Day,” in honor of the origins in the mid-1800s introducing the novel concept that workers should work 8 hours, play 8 hours and rest 8 hours (and, I gather, have a day off on which to underline the point). I think we’ve lost the concept a bit here–think of all the stores that are open tomorrow. I wonder if the workers in them are getting paid overtime?  –Mary Hunt, Editor, eFlyer

Sep 17, 2026High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture
It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
