Visiting New Zealand has been a dream ever since I met my dear friend, Christine, while living in Hawaii back in 2009. She is a native Kiwi from Auckland and has been encouraging me for years to take the long journey to her motherland. This year, my dream came true! The day after Christmas, I hopped on Air New Zealand’s 777-300 Business Premier, and I was off! My experience on board Air New Zealand was tremendous! The Kiwi hospitality is unlike any other: incredibly warm, friendly and genuine. After getting settled in my quarters, I met the flight attendants who would be hosting me, and I felt that I made friends with them by the time I deplaned! They asked me about my itinerary while on the North Island and even made recommendations on things to see and do. I really appreciated their local input! The food on board was delicious, and I especially loved their New Zealand wine and champagne selection. I will never refuse a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Noir. I also loved the components of the Business Premier amenity kit, especially the lotion and lip balm. Very high quality! The descent into Auckland was breathtaking and a true portrayal of New Zealand’s beautiful countryside.
Upon landing in Auckland, my friend was there to greet me and whisk me off to a small beach town of about 600 residents called Piha. Located on the west coast of the Auckland region, Piha is comprised of black sand beaches and is a perfect daytrip destination for Aucklanders, especially during the summer season.
Piha is home to many seasoned surfers and a famous one in particular: my friend, Iain Buchanan, aka Ratso. Iain has an impressive career as a professional surfer and still holds the World Champion title for over-50s. He has continued on to be the Head Pro Surf Judge for Europe. Little did I know that he is one of New Zealand’s surf heroes! He is also Christine’s boyfriend. I’ve known Rats for years and was elated to see him in his element in Piha and in his surf shop, Lion Rock Surf Shop. It was a privilege to chase the waves around the North Island and surf with him as well!
This blog is only the tip of the iceberg of my experiences from this trip. The bottom line is, New Zealand is the most beautiful country I have ever laid eyes on! I cannot wait to return and explore the South Island. GT readers, add this one to your travel bucket list immediately! Stay tuned for more blogs about the trip. — Rafie Iannello, account director, Global Traveler
