It Snowed at Zanies

On Saturday I joined a full house of folks at Zanies for An Evening With Al Snow. Hosted by David Vox Mullen, with Alydar Skyy as the opener, it was a great night of laughs.

A fixture on the Chicago-area entertainment scene, Vox is a longtime friend of mine. We caught up a bit on all his latest projects … and there are many: Vox is one busy guy.David Vox Mullen

When I approached Snow, I told him I really only came to see his lovely wife, Jessica, and was massively disappointed she didn’t make the trip. Snow and I have a history of jabbing each other, but he responded he completely understood, and we had a good laugh.Al Snow

In the seating area, I spotted Skyy. Another busy performer, Skyy has many projects, including writing for Divorce Diaries, a television show in production with Vox as producer. Having seen Skyy several times already, I knew she would kill, and she did.Alydar Skyy

As expected, openers Vox and Skyy revved up the crowd. Then Vox and Snow took the stage for the main show. It’s mostly Snow, with Vox jumping in on occasion and guiding the show. They have great chemistry.

The show was a bit different than the first time I saw it several months ago. Snow added more jokes to his routine of funny stories. Either way worked well because Snow is simply hilarious no matter what, but this performance produced more overall laughter. Snow did have a few wrestling stories and jokes, but you didn’t need to be a wrestling fan to enjoy the show. The trio kept the crowd laughing for 90 minutes.

After the show, I talked to some friends before saying good-bye to all. We walked outside in such a great mood.

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
