Sometimes it’s fun to play tourist in your own city. This past weekend my husband and our friends went on a historic tour in Philadelphia. Organized by Historic Philadelphia, the Independence After Hours tour takes visitors inside some of the city’s most historic landmarks for a living history experience.
We met the guide at the Museum of the American Revolution. We were given instructions about the tour and then “went back in time” to 1776. Our first stop was dinner at the historic City Tavern. On our way to the restaurant we ran into John Dunlap, the printer of the first copies of the Declaration of Independence. He informed us he was looking for Thomas Jefferson, then accompanied us to the restaurant.
At dinner, we experienced a colonial-style meal complete with recipes from the 18th century, including bread loved by Thomas Jefferson. During our meal, Dunlap and Thomas Jefferson visited us. We then followed them to Independence Hall. With all of the crowds gone for the day, we eavesdropped on Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin discussing the creation of the Declaration of Independence. At the conclusion of the tour, we returned to the present day with our own copies of the historic document.
