Usually I am a disaster in the garden. For years, I have tried to grow wild flowers (or any flowers) along the east side of my house. I have tried planting seeds, bulbs and store-bought flowers, but none ever take. I even tried replanting some flowers from my sister’s beautiful yard. Still no luck.

I have had only slightly better results on the south side of my house. Things seem to take, but they never produce well or last long. I even bought the same clematis that Global Traveler colleague Louie bought, only to see his flourish, while mine limp along.

I am proud to say though, that I finally have a successful garden experience to put on my resume, although it does stem from a previously unsuccessful planting attempt.

Years ago, I planted a lilac bush in the nook near my front door.  I happily envisioned the sweet smell of those blooms every time I enter or exited my house.  The bush seemed to take, but in the ensuing years, it produced exactly one lilac.  One lilac doesn’t make a lot of scents (or sense).

Thanks to the warm spring, I decided to end the farce and move the plant to my yard. I had one empty spot near my huge tree along the fence. Even if it still lacked lilac production, at least the bush would fill the spot.

I am happy to report that the bush is looking great. I realize I may be premature on this, but I am predicting success. The bush looks healthier than ever. The real test will be if lilacs bloom, but either way, at least the underachiever won’t be right by my front door.

Now, if I can just do something about the weed infestation in my lawn.
