Laura Gallagher, Global Traveler‘s summer intern and my daughter, left for Tanzania and Zanzibar two days ago. Her journey started in Philadelphia, where she departed on a short Delta Connection flight to JFK and then transferred to KLM to travel to Amsterdam. The following morning, she boarded another KLM flight and landed eight and a half hours later at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
Laura is traveling with a group of 15–20 college students on a GIVE trip to help build facilities at a school in Zanzibar. GIVE stands for Growth International Volunteer Excursions.
Last report had them on an 11-hour bus ride to a ferry that will take them to Zanzibar Island. From there they will begin their main mission to build a partially constructed classroom and add two additional rooms and a composting bathroom! The main materials are bottle bricks, which are water bottles filled with cement that are placed on top of each other in a crisscross fashion — a great way to use discarded plastic bottles!
Of course, there will be time to swim in the Indian Ocean and return to the mainland for a safari and other great activities like climbing Mount Kilimanjaro!
