Gran Casa Sayula in Jalisco

by Angelique Platas

Dec 26, 2019

Cornering half the market on tourist-ready accommodations in Sayula, Gran Casa Sayula offers a quintessential small-town stay in the heart of the tiny Jalisco city. Steps away from the town square, historic cathedral and other top dining locales in the area, Gran Casa is well-positioned for exploring the city on foot.

The entrance welcomes guests with a splash of colorful tiles, rich paintings and furniture. The open-air courtyard is reminiscent of a European piazza, with a small pool in the center.

First-floor guestrooms open right into the courtyard/dining room, so be prepared for diners to be within eye shot upon exit and entry.

As for the rooms upstairs, guests enjoy the view of the courtyard down below and easy access to the on-property chapel, complete with tiny pews and stained glass.

Once inside, the guestrooms are quite modest. Expect a (super) firm mattress, TV from a bygone era, décor of the same time period and, in a surprising twist, l’Occitane soaps and shampoo. The rooms offer quaint comforts and will definitely do the trick for a night or two in town.

Pro Tip: Try the tortilla soup!

Alligators, Tarzan and the Creature from Black Lagoon in Wakulla Springs, Florida

Close to the side of my tour boat — make that very close — a mother alligator rests in the reedy shallows of the Wakulla Springs shoreline, her long, prehistoric-looking nose pointed in my direction. If she thinks I’m going to bother her fleet of small offspring, also visible near the shore, she is mistaken. I’m too busy looking for any relatives of Tarzan, or for the 1954 cult movie monster Creature from the Black Lagoon who might be lurking in the trees.
