Every now and then we run an article in Global Traveler about hotel initiatives designed for female business travelers. I always approach the article with a bit of curiosity tempered by my personal belief that female business travelers expect only to be treated on par with their male counterparts. In my opinion, we don’t need pink slippers, but an illuminated make-up/shaving mirror would be nice. Healthy in-room dining options are welcome, but isn’t that true for most 21^st-century business travelers? Suit pressing? Yes — even if mine comes with a skirt. So, I’m not sure how I feel about SheRides, the NYC division of SheTaxi — an on-call taxi service operated by women for women. The SheRides app, now offered for iPhone, connects female passengers with female taxi drivers. Affiliated, pre-screened drivers wear hot-pink pashmina scarves to identify themselves. Here’s my dilemma: Do services like this benefit women? Or are they the start of a subtle shift back to a time when treating women differently meant keeping women in their place? — Lisa Matte, editor in chief
