I’ve got an interesting juxtaposition going on at the moment. After doing a lot of packing and moving, I was sitting in bed taking it easy, reading the Sunday newspaper and watching the start of the French Open men’s final. Then a motion caught my eye out the picture window: a tennis ball. Okay, it’s not that unusual, I do live in one of those Florida yacht-and-tennis clubs. But here I am with tennis on TV on one wall, and tennis in real life through the window on the wall perpendicular to the TV, so I’m watching them both. On TV, we’ve got Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, the world’s #1 and #2 players. Outside my window I’ve got two guys pushing 70 (if not waving to it in their rear-view windows), dressed in tennis whites and hitting moon balls. The guys outside are observing all the rules and minding their tempers, doing courtly end changes, and having some fairly long rallies. The guys on the tube are gentlemen too, playing at a much higher level of course. The guys here are playing in 81-degree heat; it’s under 70F. in Paris, but those guys are working up more of a sweat. I’d rather be watching the guys on TV, but it’s the guys on the court next door that make me want to go out and play myself. Maybe tonight, when it’s cooler. Meanwhile, back to the tube. I know it’s the only Grand Slam tournament Federer has never won, but I’m rooting for Nadal. – Mary Hunt, editor, eFlyer
