The other weekend, my husband and I decided to enjoy an impromptu date night at The Little Hen, one of our favorite restaurants in Haddonfield, New Jersey. The intimate BYOB restaurant has a focused menu with classic French dishes.

We rushed in from a sudden downpour and were immediately seated. The 18-seat dining room was about half full of patrons. We had been to the restaurant several times before but not in the last couple months. Many of the menu items are staples, with a few rotating items plus specials of the day. To start, we ordered the marinated olives; sautéed shrimp; and mushroom toast, one of our favorite dishes at the restaurant. The thick-cut bread is topped with whipped chèvre, lardon, assorted mushrooms and truffle oil. The shrimp dish was new to us, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. In all of our visits, I don’t think I’ve had the same entrée twice. Between the regular entrée selections and nightly specials, I’ve sampled a wide variety of dishes. On the night of this visit, I opted for the special of salmon with ratatouille. It was probably my favorite entrée I’ve ever had at The Little Hen. It was light yet flavorful and perfectly reflected the summer season.

Far too full to order dessert, we made our way outside to stroll through Haddonfield on what turned out to be a beautiful summer night.
