I had a rough weekend — to say the least — but nothing a new week won’t fix. To top it all off, on Saturday, I went to recharge my BlackBerry and the charging light would not light up. This had never happened in the year and half I’ve had my BlackBerry 8830. I wiggled the cord and still nothing. So, in a rare split decision (and with a sigh of relief), I turned the device off.The next day I went to the wireless store, took a deep breath (as I never know what kind of service to expect) and heard the bad news: the part of the phone that charges the battery was broken and can not be fixed. Of course, this was also the part of the device that is used to transfer all information when getting a new phone! I started to pace the store when I heard the only alternative was to get a new phone.Having learned my lesson before, I went for a walk before making any decision. I went back to the store, where a nice sales accountant said he could charge my battery for an hour, as there was nothing wrong with the battery, giving me time to get any information out of my phone before trading it in. I left the phone at the store and, when I came back to pick it up, another sales associate gave me an even better idea. She sent me to the CrackBerry Web site. There I found a charger that charges only the battery, without the phone. This would enable me to keep my phone until my upgrade kicks in. It also causes me fewer headaches in transferring data. I guess the third time was the charm, and I’m very thankful to the sales associate who led me to a very helpful Web site. If you need any info, devices or accessories for your BlackBerry, the Web site is the place to go.-Alex Young, vice president and associate publisherHappy St. Patrick’s Day from Global Traveler!

Sep 17, 2026High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture
It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
