Normally, I would blog about a world-class business- or first-class flight experience, but today, the flights of fancy my blog title refers to belong to grapes. You’ve heard about it for some time now, and, finally, GT‘s annual Wines on the Wing survey has been conducted. The best sommeliers, winemakers and wine experts from New York City and the metropolitan area joined us at Delmonico’s last night for a blind tasting of nearly 200 wines, separated into flights of similar grape or region by our resident wine expert, Eunice Fried. We will release the results of the survey in the August issue, and I can’t wait to see who will take home the top accolades. While watching the judges look at the wines, hold them to the light, smell and then taste, I began wondering, what makes a good wine? There are a number of courses you can delve into to discover what makes a good wine. One friend of Global Traveler told us she belongs to the Williams-Sonoma wine club, which sends her wines each month to learn about and taste. I was also impressed to hear that one of our judges was from a Wall Street background but started to become intensely involved in wine studies and now has her own wine-winning category. I still believe your choice of wine is like choosing art. While some pieces may be very popular, you still have to choose what looks and tastes good to you. So, next time you are on board an airplane flying across the country or an ocean and you have a wine that impresses you, please don’t hesitate to tell us about your flight of fancy! — Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher
