On my June trip to Taipei to attend the official joining ceremony of EVA Air into Star Alliance, I had the opportunity to fly EVA’s recently updated business-class product (more on that in an upcoming GT Tested review!) and visit their Evergreen headquarters, tour the famed Hello Kitty aircraft and check out their lounges at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport.
The Evergreen Corporation, originally a maritime company, launched EVA Air in March 1989, with the first flight in 1991. Since that time, the airline has grown to include a fleet of 43 aircraft, including Boeing 777s and 747s and Airbus A330s and A321s. The airline serves seven North American destinations with 47 flights per week. As of March 9, 2013, the airline’s frequent-flyer program was rebranded Infiniti MileageLands. The airline’s Royal Laurel Class was also recently upgraded.
EVA has five Hello Kitty jets, each with different livery. Hello Kitty is an extremely popular brand in Asia, and we had the chance to tour the jet and appreciate the Hello Kitty experience.

EVA Air’s Hello Kitty is a themed flight, right down to the toilet. Rumor has it the airline will receive the first Hello Kitty 777 aircraft in September; while no decision has been made of the market, North America is apparently being considered.
I enjoyed lunch at The Garden lounge, a calm, open-air lounge overlooking the terminal. It’s exclusive yet inviting and open, allowing for a fresh but private experience. The subdued décor complements the full-service, plentiful food options. EVA has three other lounge spaces at the airport. Look for more from EVA as they embark on their new history as a member of Star Alliance!
