This has been a year of Philadelphia firsts for me. Early September marked my first Phillies game. Last week, I attended my first Union game, Philadelphia’s professional soccer team. It needs to be said that I have never been a big fan of soccer. I played for one season during middle school and had more fun off the field with friends than on the field playing the game. However, after seeing the Union, I’m a fully converted soccer fan.

The Union play at PPL Park, near the Commodore Barry Bridge in Chester, Pa. My friends and I arrived early, leaving us plenty of time to park and find our seats. Lucky for us, my friend is a member of the Sons of Ben, a supporters group, and we were able to buy tickets in their supporters section. This meant participating in songs, chants and other sports rituals. Sitting shouting distance from the visiting DC United fans, I had a firsthand look at how rowdy soccer fans can behave. This display heightened further when the Union won the game, 3-2!

Sadly, the season is almost over, with only one more home game, which my friends and I plan on attending. With the 76ers (I attended a game years ago), Phillies and Union under my belt, now I am an Eagles and Flyers game away from seeing every major professional Philadelphia sports team!
