Chicago turned into a cinematographic paradise thanks to the Chicago International Film Festival. It was 12 days of films, presentations and other live and online events.
In its 58th year, the Chicago International Film Festival is North America’s longest-running competitive international film festival. Featuring the best international and independent films of all genres, its competitive categories and programs include Black Perspectives, Women in Cinema and the City & State program, which showcases films made in Chicago and Illinois.
Opening night was held at the legendary Music Box Theatre, located on the north side of Chicago. As always, I arrived early to witness the block party come alive. Soon enough, the crowd built to capacity for the screening of Steve James’ A Compassionate Spy.
After that, it was one interesting film after another. One of my favorites was Shin Ultraman, an old school sci-fi picture with an intriguing theme of humanity. Other favorites included Glass Onion, Falcon Lake and Butcher’s Crossing.

Of special interest to me were the music films. If These Walls Could Sing explores the history of Abbey Road Studios. From Mary McCartney, it offers a unique insider’s look at so much music history.

White Noise is a comedy with a musical score by Danny Elfman. Band follows the journey of an Icelandic group searching for success. The Return of Tanya Tucker – Featuring Brandi Carlile spotlights the country great and the collaboration between her and Carlile, in a new generation-meets-old documentary.

More than 6,000 films from 118 countries were considered this year, 148 films comprising the final selection. There were 56 shorts, 20 documentaries and 72 narrative features.

One of the real joys for me is seeing films I ordinarily wouldn’t see. The Chicago International Film Festival expands my scope. I especially enjoy it when those films are accompanied by discussions by those involved, allowing me to gain a whole new perspective. As someone who generally just wants to be entertained by films, I like the educational aspect of the festival as much as the entertainment.
