This past weekend I participated in the national tasting of Portuguese wines with the chapter of the American Wine Society I am a member of in a lake community in northeastern Pennsylvania. Our chapter is made up of friends and family of the lake community. This particular meeting only had members in attendance, but guests come and go and add to the monthly meetings, where we explore various wine regions around the world.
The annual national tasting is special to my chapter. It is an opportunity to contribute our judging on the pre-selected wines and then await the results from other chapters all over the United States. When tasting the selection for the national tasting, it is important to judge the wine based on its individual merit, not personal preference. I feel this exercise can be applied to many experiences in life. Judge not by what you are used to or what is ideal, but judge based on the inherent qualities of the experience.
My chapter is a group of kind, fun and smart folks. I enjoy their company and discussions. This year’s meeting was held at a member’s home. They have a gorgeous lakefront property, delicious food and a stunning garden. Summertime is the perfect season to be outside, enjoy some delicious wine and be in the company of lovely people.
