Canada’s 150th Anniversary

by jennapayesko

Apr 14, 2017

In 2017 Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary of the Confederation, promoted as Canada 150. Knowing special celebrations were just around the corner, I was eager to attend last week’s Canadian Media Marketplace in New York City to learn more about the planned events.

During a “travel industry speed dating” of sorts, I met with representatives from 24 provinces, cities and companies. The 15-minute meetings were spread across one day, and I went in hoping to learn more about the plans for Canada 150 as well as get a feel for some of the areas in Canada I am less familiar with.

An exciting new development in Vancouver later this year is The Parq, a first-of-its-kind development that will include a JW Marriott and The Douglas, an Autograph Collection Hotel; 60,000 square feet of meeting space; a casino; eight restaurants and lounges; and an elevated park.

In Québec celebrations will abound for both Canada 150 and Montréal’s 375th anniversary. I was excited to learn more about the upcoming Leonard Cohen exhibit, which the legendary composer contributed to before his recent passing.

Newfoundland and Labrador are enjoying a different type of exposure thanks to the new Broadway hit, Come From Away, while a constant draw to the area are its four UNESCO World Heritage sites. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights, opened in Winnipeg in 2014, also sounds like a fascinating must-see.

For the first time out of the United Kingdom, the Wolfpack rugby team is coming to Toronto; and Ottawa, the capital city, is where most the 150th celebrations are occurring and the only city celebrating year-round.

And that’s just the beginning of what I learned about Canada and what’s to come this year; if you’re still figuring out where to travel this year, consider Canada — from the Eastern Provinces, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Victoria and Calgary to Québec City, Niagara Falls, Charlevoix, Saguenay, Lac-Saint-Jean and Jasper.
