I couldn’t help but be a little bit giddy about my British Airways flight from Newark (EWR) to London (LHR). After seeing Boeing’s stylish Dreamliner ads in the pages of Global Traveler for the last few years, I hoped for the opportunity to be one of those smart-looking people featured in their campaign.
This past weekend I finally had the chance to experience the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. I was quite surprised when I first glanced at the business class cabin. I selected the window seat in the first row and found it facing the rear of the plane. As I entered my seat, I realized this configuration offers both direct aisle access to those seated at the window and a window view for those on the aisle — the best of both worlds! A good-sized drawer sat open at my feet and was the perfect spot for my computer and Kindle. After organizing my things, I heaved my overpacked carry-on into the massive overhead compartment and sat down to relax.
Once settled with my amenity kit and glass of Champagne, I could at last take in my surroundings. The much-buzzed-about LED mood lighting was in fact quite nice. I also realized the windows didn’t have shades; instead, they have varying levels of tint — quite futuristic!
As we headed down the runway, I was not at first a fan of facing backward as I was pulled forward rather than pushed back. But once off the ground, I had a nice long view of the ground below and knew this was a moment for my travel memory book.
Sadly, this flight lasted only six hours. I enjoyed every moment of the dining, entertainment and sleep in the fully flat seat. As I write this, I am sitting in BA’s Galleries lounge waiting to board my connecting flight to Seoul (ICN), and I am looking forward to an equally enjoyable experience.
