Artopia debuted in Chicago last Friday. Through May 15, it is open to the public Thursdays–Sundays.

Spread across 32,000 square feet within Morgan Manufacturing on the near north side of Chicago, Artopia is an immersive art experience. It features eight large sculptures and 20 murals from Chicago’s street artists. The large-scale light art installations, interactive projection mapping, sound reactive LEDs create a multidimensional and multisensory experience. Attendees are engulfed by fantastic art from all angles.

Artopia is art meeting technology. Added light and sound highlight the raw edginess of the street artists’ works. The industrial setting of Morgan Manufacturing makes a great backdrop.

Artists include Brendan Cooney, Megan Kind, Adam Artbox, Don Mega and more. Their works can be seen around the world, but Artopia is a chance to see their art together. Cooney shared his thoughts, “It’s good to see an art exhibit like this emerge during the end of this pandemic. Something fun and stimulating for the viewer. I went with a colorful piece for this show, something that really pops. I ran a limited number of prints that attendees can purchase and take a piece of the show home with them. I had a great time working with this large group of artists and seeing how this production all came together. Really looking forward to hearing some feedback.”

Suitable for all ages, the Artopia experience is a guided tour lasting about an hour. It ends at the Artopia Lounge, where attendees (over 21 with separate tickets) can enjoy beverages.

Hotel Van Zandt Review

One step onto Austin’s Rainey Street and you’ll feel like you’ve joined the cool kids at the best playground in the city. Just behind the cottage bars, pint-sized skyscrapers soar. One of them, Hotel Van Zandt, the Rainey district's pièce de resistance, beckons with a song-like spirit —apropos because the independently owned property, rife with music motifs, was named after beloved singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. Sixteen stories high, the hotel embodies Austin’s lust for music, manifesting with a vinyl corner; trumpet chandeliers; myriad musical references; replica vintage posters in frames; and its own live music venue, which doubles as its acclaimed restaurant, Geraldine’s. Don’t miss the mesmerizing installation of colorful origami-like birds composed from vinyl records that flitter from an old phonograph.
