During my trip this week, I had the good fortune to visit the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. If you are a lover of animals, I suggest you make this one of your top visits in Abu Dhabi.
Falcons and falconry are steeped in the Arabic culture. All falcons are protected and endangered species, and any falcons used for falconry must be born in captivity and bred for private use. They are much-loved as pets. Falcons have been used for hunting for centuries, but falcon hunting is illegal in the United Arab Emirates due to the damage it causes to desert species. However, hunting is allowed in countries like Uzbekistan, Pakistan and others. Falcons travel with their owners on board airlines, and it is possible for you to see an owner traveling in first class with his falcon. Some of the larger birds, like Saker falcons, can kill an animal as large as a desert gazelle by severing its spine.
The hospital takes care of routine veterinary appointments as well as more serious injuries like infections, broken wings and legs. The hospital has identified and reported on two previously unknown diseases in falcons, and its director, Dr. Muller, has written and reported these to veterinary journals.
Falcons are like your pet dog or cat and belong to the family like domesticated animals do. They can live as long as 14 years.
