Last weekend, my husband and I decided to take a last minute trip to Newport, R.I. The drive up on Saturday morning was a perfect fall picture. As we drove over the bridge into the town of Newport, I was excited to see there were beautiful water views from every angle. I couldn’t wait to check into our hotel and get down to the waterfront.
We stayed at the Hotel Viking, and it did not disappoint. The hotel sits atop Newport’s historic hill neighborhood on Bellevue Avenue. The 80-year-old property used to be the guesthouse of The Breakers Mansion. We really enjoyed their outdoor fireplace and the convenient location.
Once we were checked in, we headed down to Thames Street on the waterfront. This area of Newport is adorable and includes many different options for dining and shopping. Later in the day, we decided to check out the Cliff Walk, which runs along the ocean and winds around historic homes. This was my favorite part of the day, as it was so nice outside.
For dinner, we made a reservation at The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar on the waterfront. We were very happy with our experience there and look forward to going back for the restaurant’s award-winning scallop chowder.
Before heading out of town Sunday morning, we decided to drive by the Bellevue mansions. Wow, these homes were truly massive! My favorite was The Breakers. I would have loved to tour it at night, now that it’s decorated for the holidays! We had such a nice time and can’t wait to visit Newport again someday!

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
