This past Thursday I had the privilege of flying Qatar Airways’ Boeing 777-300 to Dubai, changing planes in Doha International Airport (DOH). It was a trip of many firsts: first time flying Qatar, first time in Doha International Airport and first time in Dubai.

When I visit any new destination, my excitement is coupled with a bit of apprehension about the unknown. I could not have been more pleased by the service and assistance provided by Qatar Airways. Recognized by GT readers in the 2011 GT Tested Reader Survey Awards for Best Onboard Service and Flight Attendants (eighth in the world) and Best Airport Staff and Gate Agents (10th in the world), I was able to experience firsthand their commitment to easing the minds and lifting the spirits of their guests. Proving once again, GT readers always know best!

Upon arrival in Doha, a friendly animated video popped up instructing us of the next steps in our journey. As the new Doha airport will not yet open until later in the year, they have put a system in place to streamline travel as they evolve. Each passenger was given a color-coded ticket based on whether they were economy arrival, economy transfer, business or first class. Three separate shuttle buses met the plane as we exited and whisked us away to our next stop. For me and the other transferring business-class passengers, it was to the Qatar Duty Free shop and first-class lounge. There we relaxed with a beverage and snack in the very elegant lounge until we were called for our plane. Again, we hopped on a shuttle and were taken directly to the aircraft.

I must say, if this is the Doha and Qatar transition system, I cannot wait to see the finished product. It was the most delightful transfer that I have ever experienced. I am looking forward to my return flight with all of the excitement, and none of the apprehension, of a second-time traveler.
