I recently attended an event for the German National Tourist Office. The luncheon, held at The Four Seasons Philadelphia, served as a conduit for informing the attending media about the events in Germany over the course of 2013.
One event stood out to me as something I’d love to experience for myself: The 200th Anniversary of Brothers Grimm Children Tales. What child doesn’t love to get caught up in the surrealism of a fairy tale? The event reminded me of something that would transport me back to my childhood and all those good memories.
The anniversary, in Hesse, marks the 150th year since the death of Jacob Grimm and the 200th anniversary of their first book, Children’s and Household Tales. The brothers are known for such beloved stories as “Cinderella,” “Puss n’ Boots,” “The Pied Piper of HameIn,” “Hansel and Gretel,” “Little Red Riding Hood” and “Rapunzel.”
The anniversary kicks off a year of activities celebrating Germany’s romantic side. Along the Rhine Legends Route, running from Düsseldorf to Mainz, travelers can visit 48 locations of inspiration for the Brothers Grimm. The German Fairytale Route runs from Hanau and Bremen, linking important locales in the life and work of the brothers. There is also a Fairytale Festival from May 1 to July 1 and the EXPEDITION GRIMM from April 27 to Sept. 8, which includes a number of original items from the brothers.
