A Tale of Two Cities

by Holly Godbey

Jan 10, 2009

I spent yesterday in New York with Dick Evans, meeting with Visit London (my favorite city), doing a One-on-One interview for the magazine, having lunch at Artisanal and attending a cocktail party at the W Tuscany. It was a long, busy day with lots of walking. My feet are screaming at me today as I forgot to take a pair of more comfortable walking shoes. As a teenager and a college student I was convinced I would end up in a big city, preferably New York, straight out of college. But, now, here I am in my hometown, working in Bucks County, PA. As I grow older, I see the wonderful advantages of where I live — nearby (within an hour) to Philadelphia, a city rich with history and hometown pride, and New York City, one of the most amazing cities in the world. You cannot beat being just a hop, skip and a jump away from those two great cities. And, at the end of the day, you just hop back on a train and are home and away from the hustle and bustle. By train, on NJ Transit, you can reach NYC in just a touch over an hour. By car, on I-95, Philadelphia (Center City, not the city limits) is anywhere between a half hour to an hour (depending on traffic) and a reasonable SEPTA train ride as well. It often shocks me to find out my peers (who live around me) have never been to NYC! It is so close and a world-class city — how have they never made that trip? Even as a youngster, I remember visiting the city for Broadway shows, the Rockettes and more. In college, the city was a popular meeting place for those of us from PA, CT, NJ and NY. Not only is Bucks County located near cities with great shopping, great food, great entertainment and more, it is located near cities rich in history, particularly Philadelphia. It is nice to see the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. And the newest addition, the Constitution Center, is rich in history and fun. Not to mention, the city has quality theatrical performances and a first-rate Orchestra. And New York is also full of history, including Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. When it comes to location, no complaints here! -Kimberly Krol, eFlyer editor and circulation and PR executive

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
