A Small Snafu

Dec 21, 2010

Yesterday morning Newark International Airport’s Terminal A was shut down for a brief amount of time due to a suspicious package, which was a computer monitor emitting small amounts of radiation. The radiation is normal, according to CNN.com. I was glad to see the airport take precautions and to see the incident cleared quickly. The package was found in the checked luggage screening area — I’m glad to see this working! I watched some news coverage of the incident and saw that when the terminal re-opened, the first people I saw going into the terminal were, undoubtedly, business travelers. Their suits, coats, carry-ons and determined strides were obvious. That minor detail may have been small to most, but to me, it re-emphasized the importance of business travel to the industry as a whole. When a deal has to be signed or an important meeting attended, it takes a lot to deter a business traveler, and yesterday was another example. It was important for the airport to follow up on this threat because, as this busy travel week progresses, I’m sure we will see more threats. As a travel community, we have to persevere, follow the rules and help each other to ensure we don’t have another tragedy. I know the authorities are at work to prevent these situations, and I look forward to seeing my fellow travelers on the road and in the airports. — Alex Young, vice president and associate publisher

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
