Recently, my friend and I saw the film, Midnight in Paris. It was the first trip for both of us to the Ritz Five Theatre located in Philadelphia’s Old City. Founded in 1976, this theater plays independent, foreign and documentary films, among others. The cobblestone street in front of the building adds to the charm of the Ritz Five. The lobby boasts a gourmet concession stand featuring treats such as biscotti and organic teas, plus the old standbys of popcorn and fountain soda. As we handed our tickets over, one of the friendly staff members told us the movie was great and we were in for a special experience. Once seated, we enjoyed our snacks and the air conditioning, while we waited for the movie to start. The manager came in to greet the audience, welcoming us to the Ritz. We enjoyed the film in the intimate yet welcoming theater. The movie-going experience was a nice change from the all-too-common multiplexes showing blockbusters to large audiences. My favorite theater is still the Angelika in New York City, with a beautiful mural in the lobby and a concession stand comparable to most bakeries.
