United Airlines now offers regularly scheduled flights using sustainable aviation biofuel. This is one of the first instances in which advanced biofuels are being used in standard operations, rather than demonstrations and tests. The biofuel will be used on regular flights between Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO) at first, before being integrated into other regular operations.
United Airlines will go on to purchase as much as 15 million gallons of the biofuel from AltAir Paramount over the next three years. The airline will store and transport it just as it does its regular fuel.
“Today’s historic launch of regularly scheduled service utilizing advanced biofuels represents a major next step in our ongoing commitment to operate sustainably and responsibly. United is a leader in the advancement of alternative fuels, and, along with our partners at AltAir Paramount, we are taking action every day to minimize our impact on the environment and explore new ways to improve efficiency,” said Angela Foster-Rice, managing director of environmental affairs and sustainability, United Airlines.
