At the Martin-Gropius-Bau — originally constructed as a royal art museum in 1881 — a new exhibition Voices of Dissent: Art in the GDR 1976–1989 takes an artistic look at public and private dissidence and distancing from official government, expressed through a variety of mediums including film, music, performances, poetry and painting (through Sept. 26). Over at the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin through Oct. 30, the topic is the golden age of Spanish art in El Siglo de Oro: The Age of Velázquez. A collection comprised of 150 masterworks by artists including Velázquez, El Greco, Francisco de Zurbarán, Bartolomé E. Murillo, Alonso Cano and Gregorio Fernández will be shown outside of Spain’s borders for the first time. Films, lectures and concerts held at Berlin’s Kulturforum will supplement the exhibition.
