Bauhaus Week opens Aug. 31–Sept. 8, in Berlin. Visitors can enjoy “original Bauhaus” Sept. 6, when the highly anticipated Humboldt Forum opens in the city. This year is Bauhaus Year, celebrating the 100^th anniversary of the form’s foundation. Another opening will take place in September, when The Futurium opens as a venue linking politics, society, art and business.

Sept. 12–15, Berlin Tempelhof Airport will be the setting for Berlin Art Week. Along with world-class exhibitions, the week will feature artist talks, visits to project rooms and performances. Artists from more than 10 countries will be represented, showcasing a range of contemporary and modern works.

Elsewhere, worthy exhibitions include “East Berlin – Half a Capital,” May 11–Nov. 9, at the Ephraim-Palais, detailing the history of East Berlin — former capital of the GDR — from the late 1960s to reunification in 1990. Opening June 28 at Museum Europäischer Kulturen, visitors can peruse objects from ethnological collections dating to the merging of the formerly divided East and West.

Also worth seeing, The Parliament of Trees is a new memorial site and installation that melds trees and physical parts of the city’s former border defense complex. Each of the 16 trees represents one of the 16 German federal states, juxtaposed with 58 pieces of the old Berlin Wall. Some sections received artistic treatment, while others stand in unadorned originality.
