As the fifth season of the popular drama Downton Abbey fills television screens around the world, Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St. Moritz, Switzerland is set to host the Downton Palace on Ice event. On Feb. 7 at 4 p.m., members of the German Victorian costume club Victorias Enkel (Victoria’s Grandchildren), dressed in the trendiest winter fashions from the late 19th century, will take to the hotel’s own ice rink to participate in a curling tournament. In case you don’t know, the sport of curling involves sliding polished granite stones across ice in order to strike a target and gain points.

The fabulous hotel’s ice rink was the idea of Johannes Badrutt, and its incarnation involves a bet he made against hotel guests from England 150 years ago. Badrutt is credited for not only bringing St. Moritz to the attention of legions of tourists, but also for opening the very first curling rink in Europe. During the February tournament, mulled wine and pastries will be served. A Curling Master will offer curling classes for both beginners and advanced enthusiasts.
