Avalon Waterways expands opportunity to experience unique sights, colorful cultures and ancient traditions with the addition of a new Suite Ship, the Avalon Saigon.

The new ship, following the recent fleet addition of two new 36-guest Suite Ships, will cruise further into the Far East, offering new ways to explore Southeast Asia.

“Avalon river cruises go beyond expectation. They go beyond the grand waterways of Europe, too,” said Terri Burke, managing director, Avalon Waterways. “With a maximum capacity of only 36 guests, our smaller Mekong and Irrawaddy Suite Ships invite travellers to see the world differently by sailing into surprising places other ships simply cannot.  Gliding through narrow passageways, these intimate ships get travellers up close to the sights, cultures and traditions of Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar.”

On Avalon’s new Southeast Asia Suite Ships — the Avalon Saigon, Avalon Myanmar and Avalon Siem Reap — travellers are welcomed by 18 well-appointed Avalon Suites with 245 square feet of living space and the ship’s signature Open-Air Balconies, featuring floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall panoramic windows.

In addition to the new ship, the line will introduce a new itinerary to see and explore Vietnam and Cambodia. The Heart of Cambodia & Vietnam is an 18-day journey through the destinations along the Mekong River and Ha Long Bay.

In celebration of the things to come, Avalon is offering a “See the World” sales event. Those booking a 2018 river cruise to Southeast Asia can save up to $2,000 per couple.

What Maui Visitors Need to Know

There’s a lot happening on the beautiful island of Maui and recovery from the devastating fires in Lahaina is underway. Among happy events is a gorgeous cultural redesign of all the suites and villas at Fairmont Kea Lani, plus the opening of the resort’s Hale Kukuna — a 2,000-square-foot cultural center that focuses on sharing Hawai’ian culture, traditions and history, with the goal of a reciprocal sharing of ‘ike (knowledge) and mo’olelo (stories) that link the island’s storied past and vibrant present.

Explore Portugal on a Wine Tasting Tour with a Touch of History

All it takes is one glance at the grounds of Quinta Dona Maria, which includes a grand villa and surrounding gardens, to realize wine tasting in Portugal comes with a good dose of history. The vineyard is located in Estremoz, just northeast of the first-century Roman ruins found in Evora. In 1718 King João V built this estate for his lover, Dona Maria. When she died, the current owner’s ancestors purchased the land and have been making wine ever since. Taste the wine, which is terrific, especially the full-bodied red Dona Maria Grand Reserve. Then venture inside a building that stores large amphora vases, including one dating back to the 1200s.
