Ever wish you could discover the next hot spot before anyone else? Get in on the ground floor? There’s a fleeting chance that opportunity has emerged, literally, in the Arabian Sea.

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake in southwestern Pakistan on Sept. 24 caused a new island to emerge off the coast of Gwadar, Pakistan. A team of Pakistani researchers who collected soil samples from the new island warned local fishermen to stay clear for now; there’s some question regarding the viability of the land mass.

“There are stones and mud,” Mohammed Danish, a geologist with the Pakistani Navy told Pakistan’s GEO TV. “Gases are still emitting.”

Witnesses who visited the island describe it as being about 100 feet wide and 25 feet long with an average altitude of just 60 feet.

“For earthquakes in this part of the world, along the coast of Pakistan and Iran, it’s not an uncommon phenomenon,” Bill Barnhart, research geophysicist, U.S. Geological Survey, told ABC News, citing other earthquake-triggered islands that temporarily popped up in 2011, 2001 and 1945 before sinking back into the sea.

“They disappeared because they’re large piles of mud that erupt onto the sea floor and rise up above sea level. So with storms, they wash away pretty quickly,” Barnhart said. “They’re not necessarily made of hard rock. We expect this one will likely be gone within a couple months.”

Rare opportunity or temporary occurrence? Either way, it’s a fascinating development.
