Hong Kong and other Asian destinations are named the world’s most expensive cities for expatriate cost of living. The Mercer annual cost of living survey, in its 22^nd year, revealed five of the top 10 most expensive cities are located in Asia. Following Hong Kong are Singapore, Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing. Other most expensive cities around the world include Luanda, Zürich, Kinshasa, Geneva and N’Djamena. Shenzhen, Seoul and Guangzhou all took top spots as well, though they weren’t expensive enough to make it into the top 10. The survey calculated cost of living based off currency fluctuations, cost inflation for goods and services and instability of accommodation prices, among other factors. “Despite technology advances and the rise of a globally connected workforce, deploying expatriate employees remains an increasingly important aspect of a competitive multinational company’s business strategy. However, with volatile markets and stunted economic growth in many parts of the world, a keen eye on cost efficiency is essential …,” said Ilya Bonic, senior partner and president, Mercer Talent. The least expensive city for expatriates? The survey points to Windhoek, Namibia.
