Travel data company Arrivalist, using data from its Daily Travel Index, predicts Americans will take 36.8 million road trips over the Fourth of July weekend. Road trip travel will be down over 2019, when 41.1 million took to the road, but it will mark the biggest road trip event so far this year.
The Daily Travel Index launched April 1, providing free access to the public. The index shows the relative performance of road trip volume across the country as compared to an average day in February 2020, pre-pandemic. The highest indexed volume in 2020 was President’s Day Weekend, at 85.2 percent. Arrivalist predicts the Fourth of July holiday will be higher, at 113 percent over the index baseline.
“The pent-up demand for travel we’re seeing, coupled with low gas prices, limited flight service and the fact that July 4th falls on a Saturday all indicate that the Independence Day holiday will be the largest road trip event of 2020 so far,” said Cree Lawson, founder and CEO, Arrivalist.
Weekends leading up to this year’s Fourth of July holiday also saw a marked increase in road trip travel.
