Are Juice Boxes a TSA Threat?

Jul 14, 2017
News

A mother filed a complaint with the Transportation Security Administration after an agent at Denver International Airport allegedly threatened a full-body search over juice boxes required for her diabetic son.

The juice boxes are a medical necessity for a 10-year-old boy who suffers from Type 1 diabetes. The woman said she passed through Denver and other airports with the juice boxes in the past without issue, noting the drinks were packed away in a bag alongside other medical supplies. Her complaint to the TSA expressed concern over inconsistency when it comes to how agents execute certain protocols.

“And he said, ‘The only way I’m going to test these juices and let these juices pass is if you submit to a fully body search and we get your luggage, we’ll take your carry-on bags, and we’re going to search every single thing you have with you. Is that what you want?” said the woman about the TSA agent.

TSA managers met with the woman in Denver since the April incident, and the agency’s disability branch confirmed leadership planned to meet with the office responsible for defining the screening procedures to see what could be done to standardize the procedure nationally for screening medically necessary liquids.

Last month, TSA agents at Denver came under fire for dumping a mother’s breast milk after it tested positive for explosives. The administration since issued an apology for the May incident.

Air travelers with disabilities or medical conditions are encouraged to reach out to TSA through the TSA Cares hotline at 855 787 2227 several days before travel to ensure a smooth security screening.
