Last month, Amtrak announced it would expand its pets program to include travelers on routes in New York and some parts of Vermont. According to the company’s official site, passengers can now travel with their dogs and cats on trips of up to seven hours on the Empire Service, Adirondack, Maple Leaf and Ethan Allen Express trains in the two states. Amtrak launched reservations for pets Aug.15, with travel permitted starting Aug. 22. Amtrak adopted its pets program in October 2015; since then, more than 10,000 animals have traveled on the Northeast Corridor. In July, some 2,000 pets and owners took to the rails. Bringing your pet on board an Amtrak train costs $25 and the program has generated more than $1 million in revenue since it was instated. There are some restrictions: The animal and carrier can weigh only up to 20 pounds, pets must remain in carriers at all times and only five pet spots are allowed per train. “Rail service is an extremely important part of the transportation system in New York State and by allowing small pets on trains, we are making it easier for more people to travel via rail,”  Matthew J. Driscoll, commissioner, New York State Department of Transportation, said in a statement. “Governor Cuomo has always maintained that government should work for the people, and allowing pets on Amtrak trains is one more way to do just that.”
