Announced in late April, Amsterdam plans to reduce the number of overnight tourists and ban all new hotel developments in the Dutch capital city. The two-part plan follows on the heels of other initiatives the city has taken to clamp down on overtourism.
Last year the city banned cruise liners from docking in city center and aims to enforce stricter rules for riverboat cruises in the near future. Under the new plan, a new hotel will be allowed to open only if another closes and will not be allowed to offer a higher number of beds than its predecessor.
It’s the latest in a string of attempts to reduce crowding from tourists. In 2021 Amsterdam tried and failed to ban tourists from its cannabis coffee shops. In early 2023 the city implemented a weed ban in the Red Light District.
