With a New Year come new travel opportunities and, according to a recent survey from AAA, 42 percent of Americans plan to vacation in 2017 with most planning trips to warm-weather destinations.

Despite a rocky 2016, the New Year is expected to be a busy one for travel, as one-third of U.S. adults reported they are likely to take a vacation this year compared to 2016 and, according to the survey, most Americans are seeking new experiences.

“There is a lot of pent-up demand for travel in the new year,” said Bill Sutherland, senior vice president of travel and publishing, AAA. “Whether they’re taking a road trip to a well-known domestic destination or visiting an exotic international locale, today’s travelers are seeking experiences that are unique and immersive.”

As most of the country is in the middle of a harsh winter, warm-weather destinations within the United States and abroad are particularly appealing to travelers. The top international destinations for 2017, based on AAA’s travel bookings, are Punta Cana; Rome; Montego Bay, Jamaica; London; and Nassau, The Bahamas.

Top domestic itineraries include Orlando; Fort Lauderdale; Anaheim, Calif.; Miami; and Las Vegas.

Other notable destination predictions include Melbourne and Sydney, Australia; Toronto and Vancouver, Canada; and Cancún, Mexico.

Some other travel trends AAA predicts for 2017 include experiential travel for novice and expert travelers alike; a rise in Canadian travel; a rise in trips to Ireland and Iceland due to the availability of low airfares and perception of safety in both countries; a continuing rise in river cruising, as millennials are more likely to consider a river cruise than Generation X or Baby Boomer travelers; and a rise in visits to national parks, as the National Park Service celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016.
