In 2018, U.S. travelers are projected to spend travel time pursuing their passions, according to a new study from American Express Travel.

“For 2018, we see U.S. travelers expanding personal and global boundaries when they travel. We noted an increased interest in cultural discovery; personal connections; inspiring destinations; and premium, rejuvenating travel experiences,” said Tom Stein, vice president, American Express Travel.

More than half (57 percent) of those surveyed for the report say their most important 2018 travel goal is to see a new destination they’ve never experienced before and about the same (52 percent) enjoy getting lost in and discovering new dining and shopping options. Nearly half (49 percent) prefer trips they describe as “adventurous” and “exciting.”

Nearly 70 percent plan to fly first or business class in 2018, and 56 percent say luxury air travel is a desirable perk. About one quarter plan to use an airport lounge in the next year.

From those surveyed, it was found who you are traveling with is more important than where you are going. More than half seek to interact with locals and an equal amount would like to stay with a local while traveling.

The Top 10 travel destinations for 2018 as based on American Express Travel booking data are Bali, Costa Rica, Dubai, London, Portugal, Rome, Tel Aviv, Utah-lorado, Vietnam and Zurich. Utah-lorado is defined as the region containing Park City, Salt Lake City, Aspen, Denver and Vail.
