American Express announced a new version of its Premier Rewards Gold Card, now renamed the American Express Gold Card. The card offers more perks for cardholders on the go, with rewards focused on food and travel.
“We designed the new Gold Card to reward our card members’ growing appetites for dining out, eating in and traveling near and far,” said Rachel Stocks, executive vice president of global premium products and benefits, American Express. “Our card members increasingly want to experience new cuisines and explore new places, so when creating this new product, we focused on adding value in these areas, like the new dining credit and 4X points accelerators at U.S. restaurants and supermarkets. This is just another way that we strive to have our customers’ backs during the moments they value most.”
Cardholders now earn 4X membership reward points at U.S. restaurants and supermarkets, up to $25,000 in purchases annually for the latter. This is double the card’s previous earning potential for restaurant and supermarket spending. Cardholders likewise receive a $120 dining credit or up to $10 per month when they dine at Shake Shack, The Cheesecake Factory or Ruth’s Chris Steak House, or dine using Grubhub or Seamless.
Cardholders receive a Travel Collection by Travel Leaders Group membership, which comes with value-added discounts and travel amenities. The card retains some of its prior travel perks, including triple points on flights booked directly with airlines or amextravel.com, a $100 airline fee credit per year, a $75 hotel credit for stays at properties within The Hotel Collection and personalized travel service.
The new card also boasts a new design, including a limited-edition rose gold version, available through Jan. 9, 2019.
A limited time welcome bonus is available through Jan. 9 as well. Members receive 20 percent back in statement credits on dining purchases at U.S. restaurants, up to $100 per account, during the first three months. Additionally, new cardholders earn 25,000 reward points after spending $2,000 on purchases in the first three months.

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
