World Monuments Fund is the world’s leading independent organization created to save globally significant historic sites. The organization recently announced a new partnership with American Express and the company’s donation of $1 million to preserve five sites currently under threat. “Historic preservation has long been a hallmark of American Express and we are proud to serve as a founding sponsor of the World Monuments Watch. Conserving the world’s most treasured places is an important investment in our history and the heritage of future generations,” said Timothy J. McClimon, president, American Express Foundation. Sites benefitting from the donation include Char Narayan Temple, Nepal; Arch of Janus, Italy; Chapultepec Park, Mexico; Convents of Seville, Spain; and Moseley Road Baths, England. Char Narayan Temple is one of many cultural sites damaged in last year’s earthquakes. Funds for The Arch of Janus, closed off to the public since 1993, will be used to complete a full restoration. Chapultepec Park’s 19^th-century gatehouse, once a military school, will be transformed into a museum. The convents of Seville, ranging in age from eight to five centuries, will use funds to draw tourists’ attention to their existence and history. Moseley Road Baths is currently facing government closure due to budgetary reasons, but now may be able to continue functioning as a cultural, historical and architectural landmark in Birmingham, England.
